History question about an essay and dont know what in the heck it’s talking about. the essay question is?

The United States government has always been involved in the economy, beliefs in Social Darwinsim and laissez-faire supported the rise of corporate capitalism where the goverment actively supported the interest of the elite and not the poor. In the late 19th century, the United States goverment began to put the motto, "E Pluribus Unum" (out of many one) on its currency. Considering the effects of industrialization on American life from 1870 to 1900, evaluate whether or not this motto was an accurate observation of a society undergoing rapid change and strain. ........What the HECK does this mean?!?!?!

I guess it’s suggesting that if the US is a class-stratified society, and this stratification is actively supported by the government, then the country is not really unified. I guess your teacher is suggesting that the industrialization during the period mentioned created a greater stratification, that is, more inequality in the distribution of wealth (as masses of people moved from farms to cities), so the motto was not an accurate description of the country. (But I’m just guessing, so you should confirm that that was in fact the effect of industrialization during that period.)
