How does a constitution, written or unwritten, limit direct/true democracy?

I'm doing an essay and I am missing one really good point around this question. I just need some things to put down on how a constitution, created on the backbone of liberal principals, limits a true democracy. what does it stop a true democracy from doing?Just to be sure, I'm not asking at how a constitution is a bad thing, I know the difference between a true/direct democracy and an indirect/representative democracy such as the US or UK.Thanks!

  1. irrationally says:

Correct, a constitution offers protections for a country’s citizens. The problem with a constitution is that the more complex they are, the more they become outdated. For example; in the past, people needed guns to give themselves protection against 1. Indians, 2. Lawless individuals in far flung territories with little or no police, 3. Marauding gangs in the aftermath of the civil war. None of those conditions exist today but we’re still saddled with a constitution right to arms.

  2. unsizable says:

The Constitution protects MINORITIES against the majorities…A person or a group, however unpopular, is still legally protected by the document. Without such formal protection, a majority could pass a law to, for example, simply kill (or imprison) the members of the unpopular group. It would be LEGAL.
