Well ya – get a copy of this old play and find out what it’s all about. Obviouisly the people who went to see Midsummer Night’s Dream when Shakespeare acted in it knew this old play very well – otherwise Shakespeare wouldn’t have used it. So think about each person going to see this Shakespeare play being reminded of this old story they’d heard many times. And how does that fit into the Midsummer Night’s Dream when that play was brand new?

The whole point of the play within the play is that Bottom and his friends are really bad actors. The story of Pyramus and Thisbe is a genuine ancient myth, a tragic tale of doomed love and untimely death. (You can web search it to find out more.) But Bottom and Quince and Flute and the rest of them do such a terrible job that they turn the tragedy into a goofy comedy. The rest of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a comedy in which everything eventually works out for the lovers, even though it seems for a while that everything is going to go wrong. Then, after the problems have been solved and the couples have all been married, they watch this play that’s supposed to be a tragedy but turns out to be a laugh riot.
