From the Cradle to College

4 Resources To Help Pass Your Online Medical Assistant Classes

Do you want to learn to be a medical assistant using popular online courses? This rewarding job in the health care industry is constantly growing and offers a wide variety of choices for your career direction. But many people are concerned about being able to keep up with online classes and pass the final exam. If you're worried about this, here are a few key resources you can look to for help.

1. College Resources. A good online medical assisting program has built-in resources for students of all types. You may find many similar resources as you would at a physical campus, including a writing center to help you craft your papers and tutors who may be able to work with you one-on-one. Research the resources included with your program and give them a test run. While you may not take full advantage of every single extra provision, you're sure to find a few that will be tailored to your needs.

2. Industry Associations. Joining an industry association, such as the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) or the National Healthcare Association, aren't just useful after you become licensed. In fact, they often provide good resources to members who are still learning their trade. You may be able to find quite a few specialized publications, mentoring options, industry blogs, newsletters, articles, research papers, and databases. These not only provide source material for class assignments but also keep you abreast of what's going on in your field.

3. Tutors. Online course work is an excellent way to learn on your own schedule and in your own way, but some people are hesitant to lose the in-person aspect of classes. If you feel this way, consider creating a combined learning environment for yourself. Many schools offer tutoring options for students — particularly those with any special learning needs — or can connect you with tutors in your chosen field. A tutor will work to reinforce what you learn online and to provide answers to questions you may have.

4. Networking Connections. Few resources are more valuable than having contacts who already work in the field. Look for opportunities to meet and get to know medical assistants who are graduated and working in the field. Visit local organization meetings or just reach out to graduates through your school. Talking with someone who's been there already can help calm your nerves, give you good advice, and answer your questions.

Can your online school experience benefit from any or all of these simple resources? If you think so, start by meeting with a counselor at your school today for more ideas.
